Best Flooring for Balconies and Terraces in the UAE: Standing Up to the Sun

Modern UAE balcony with light composite decking in the sun

Reviewed for accuracy by Muhammad Gulbadin, founder and operations manager at Urban Flooring, 15+ years in UAE flooring.

For UAE balconies and terraces, WPC composite decking is the practical lead: waterproof, UV-stabilised and cooler underfoot than tile. Artificial grass suits a soft green corner, and interlocking deck tiles are the renter-friendly option that lifts and moves. All sit on top of the balcony’s own waterproofing; the surface does not waterproof the structure. Porcelain pavers are the hard alternative we do not fit.

What a balcony or terrace floor has to survive in the UAE

A UAE balcony is one of the harshest places you can put a floor. Before choosing a surface, it helps to see everything it has to take:

  • Relentless sun and UV, which fades and degrades anything not properly stabilised.
  • Surface heat underfoot, with balcony surfaces passing 50°C on a July afternoon.
  • Rain run-off and drainage, in the short bursts the UAE does get, which must reach the drain.
  • Wind, which on a high-rise balcony lifts at the edges and corners.
  • Weight limits, since a balcony is a cantilevered structure with a load ceiling.
  • The waterproofing underneath, which is what actually keeps the room below dry.

No outdoor surface beats all of this effortlessly, so the honest answer is to match the surface to the balcony, and to be clear about what the floor does and does not do.

The table sets the realistic options side by side. Porcelain pavers and natural hardwood appear as honest comparison context, Urban fits composite decking and artificial grass, not pavers, stone or hardwood, so those figures are indicative market rates, not our quotes.

WPC composite decking: the practical balcony and terrace floor

WPC decking is the practical lead for a UAE balcony or terrace. It is waterproof and UV-stabilised, grooved for grip and drainage, splinter-free, and lasts around 25 years in UAE conditions, far longer than natural hardwood. Capped or co-extruded boards in lighter tones also run cooler underfoot than porcelain or stone in summer. It needs proper end gaps for thermal expansion in the heat and a non-penetrating sub-frame or pedestals beneath, both of which a site visit sets out. For a full villa terrace or a balcony you want finished wall to wall, this is the floor.

Interlocking deck tiles: the renter-friendly option that lifts and moves

If you rent, or you cannot drill into the balcony, interlocking composite deck tiles are the answer. They clip together and rest loose over the existing balcony floor with no framing, fixings or adhesive, and they lift straight out when you move, so they come with you. Their open base lets water drain through to the existing drain, and individual tiles lift for cleaning or drain access. They are the same composite as the planks, just in a renter-friendly, modular format, ideal for an apartment balcony.

Artificial grass: a soft green corner for a balcony or terrace

Artificial grass turns part of a balcony into a soft, green, child and pet-friendly corner. Choose a UV-stable turf with a permeable, punched backing so water drains straight through, and keep the balcony drain clear. It warms in direct sun like everything else out there, but stays cooler underfoot than dark composite, and a quick rinse both cools it and keeps it fresh. Good turf lasts around 8 to 15 years. On a windy high balcony, secure the edges so it cannot lift. Many balconies pair a decked main area with a grass corner.

Does WPC decking get too hot in direct UAE sun?

Yes, and an honest guide has to say so: every outdoor surface warms in full UAE sun, where balcony surfaces can pass 50°C on a July afternoon, and darker boards get hottest of all. Nothing stays genuinely cool in peak summer, so be wary of any product that claims to.

What actually makes a real difference is the spec and the setting. Capped or co-extruded composite boards in light to mid tones run noticeably cooler than dark composite, and cooler than porcelain or stone, in the same sun. Shade, whether a pergola, an awning or the building’s own shadow for part of the day, helps every surface. So the honest position is not “this floor stays cool”, it is “lighter tones, capped boards and some shade are what keep it usable when the sun is at its worst”. Dark composite is the hottest of the practical options.

Does laying decking waterproof a balcony? What actually keeps it dry

This is the point most balcony floor guides skip, and it is the one that protects the room below: laying decking or grass does not waterproof a balcony.

What keeps a balcony dry is its own waterproofing membrane bonded to the slab, plus the falls built into the slab that run water to the drain. The decking, deck tiles or grass float above that on a non-penetrating system, a sub-frame, adjustable pedestals or a shock-pad, that rests on the surface without puncturing the membrane. The surface protects the membrane; it does not replace it. Two rules follow from this, and they matter:

  • The system must never puncture the waterproofing membrane. A fixing drilled through the membrane is a future leak.
  • The surface must never block the drainage path. Water has to flow off the surface, across the drainage plane and into the drain or scupper freely; pedestal and modular tile systems lift for drain access precisely so this stays clear.

So if a balcony leaks, the answer is the membrane and the drainage, not the floor on top. The floor you choose makes the balcony usable and good-looking; the membrane underneath is what makes it watertight.

Porcelain pavers and tiles: the honest hard-surface rival

Porcelain pavers are the default premium terrace surface in the UAE, and a fair guide concedes where they lead. They are the hardest and most durable option, they will not fade, they have very low thermal expansion, a textured R11 paver gives good slip resistance, and they are low maintenance. For a buyer set on a hard, premium, fully paved villa terrace, pavers are the honest fit, though we do not supply or fit them.

The trade-offs are real, though: pavers are heavy, which matters on a balcony with a load limit, they get hot underfoot in full sun and stay hard, and they cost more to install once you add bedding or pedestals and the heavier labour. For most balconies and many terraces, composite decking gives the practical balance, lighter, faster to fit, cooler-looking in light tones and often laid straight over the existing balcony floor, and that is the option we would steer you to rather than to a tiler.

Wind, drainage and weight: the balcony-specific catches

A balcony adds three catches a ground-level garden does not, and they are worth getting right.

Wind. On a high-rise balcony the highest wind pressures hit the edges and corners. Fixed decking on a sub-frame is fine, but loose-lay deck tiles and grass on an exposed or high balcony need their edges restrained, with a perimeter trim, interlocking pins, a bonded edge or ballast, so nothing can lift. Enclosed balconies are far lower risk.

Drainage. Keep the path to the drain clear at all times. Whatever the surface, water must run off it, across the drainage plane and into the drain. Never seal over or block a balcony drain, and choose a system whose tiles or boards lift so the drain stays accessible.

Weight. A balcony has a load limit. Lightweight composite decking and artificial grass, on aluminium framing where used, are far lighter than stone pavers and planters. Loading a balcony with heavy stone or large planters needs a structural sign-off first; composite and grass are the balcony-friendly weights.

How much does balcony and terrace flooring cost in the UAE?

Balcony and terrace flooring cost depends on the surface and the access. Indicatively, supplied and fitted: WPC composite decking runs about AED 120 to 400+/sqm (about AED 11.1 to 37.2+/sqft) including the sub-frame or pedestals, and artificial grass about AED 45 to 160/sqm (about AED 4.2 to 14.9/sqft). Interlocking composite deck tiles sit in the same decking band and are supply-led. For comparison, porcelain pavers are an indicative market rate rather than our quote, and carry heavier bedding or pedestal labour. All prices exclude 5% VAT and depend on the balcony, the access and the existing floor. For the full breakdown across every floor type, see our flooring cost guide.

Which floor for your balcony or terrace?

The right surface follows the space and how you use it.

  • Small apartment balcony or a rental: interlocking deck tiles or an artificial grass corner, both loose-laid, no drilling, and they come with you when you move.
  • Large villa terrace: full WPC decking on a sub-frame, finished wall to wall, in a light capped tone for heat.
  • A green relaxation corner for kids or pets: artificial grass, with the drain kept clear and the edges secured.
  • Set on a hard, premium paved look: porcelain pavers are the honest fit, even though we fit composite and grass rather than pavers.

For the wider villa grounds, garden and pool surrounds, that is a different brief from the balcony, and our outdoor villas and gardens guide will cover it.

Balcony and terrace flooring: frequently asked questions

What is the best flooring for a balcony in the UAE?

WPC composite decking is the practical lead: waterproof, UV-stabilised, grooved for grip and cooler underfoot than tile. Artificial grass suits a soft green corner, and interlocking deck tiles are the renter-friendly choice that lifts and moves with no drilling. Porcelain pavers are the hard, premium alternative, though we fit composite decking and grass, not pavers. The right pick depends on the space.

Does composite or WPC decking get hot in the sun?

Yes, like every outdoor surface it warms in direct UAE sun, where balcony surfaces can pass 50°C in July, and darker boards get hottest. Capped or co-extruded boards in lighter tones run noticeably cooler, and stay cooler underfoot than porcelain or stone. Nothing stays genuinely cool in peak sun, so lighter tones and some shade make the real difference.

Can you lay decking or grass on an apartment balcony without drilling?

Yes. Interlocking composite deck tiles clip together and rest loose over the existing balcony floor with no drilling or fixings, and lift out when you move, ideal for renters. Artificial grass can be loose-laid or lightly secured the same way. The one rule: never block the balcony drain, the surface must let water flow through to it.

Does laying decking waterproof my balcony?

No. Decking and grass do not waterproof a balcony, the balcony’s own waterproofing membrane and its falls to the drain keep it dry. The surface floats above on a sub-frame, adjustable pedestals or a shock-pad, protecting the membrane rather than replacing it, and it must never block the drainage path. If the balcony leaks, the membrane needs attention, not the surface.

Is artificial grass any good on a UAE balcony?

Yes, for a soft green corner. Choose a UV-stable turf with a permeable, punched backing so water drains through, and keep the drain clear. It warms in direct sun but stays cooler than dark composite, and a quick rinse cools it and keeps it fresh. Good turf lasts around 8 to 15 years. On windy high balconies, secure the edges.

What is the most low-maintenance balcony flooring?

Composite decking and interlocking deck tiles. They rinse clean with water, never need sanding, sealing or oiling the way natural timber does, and do not rot, warp or splinter. Artificial grass is also low-maintenance, just an occasional rinse and brush. Natural hardwood is the high-maintenance option, needing regular sanding and oiling to survive UAE sun, which is why we fit composite.

Is decking or tiles better for a Dubai terrace?

Both work, differently. Composite decking is lighter, faster to fit, cooler-looking in light tones, and often lays over the existing balcony floor. Porcelain pavers are the hardest and most premium, fade-proof and long-lasting, but heavier, hotter underfoot and pricier to install. We fit composite decking and artificial grass, not pavers, so we would steer you to the composite that gives the practical balance.

How much does balcony flooring cost in Dubai?

Indicatively, supplied and fitted: WPC composite decking runs about AED 120 to 400+/sqm (11.1 to 37.2+/sqft) including the sub-frame, and artificial grass about AED 45 to 160/sqm (4.2 to 14.9/sqft). Interlocking composite deck tiles sit in the same decking band. Porcelain pavers are an indicative market rate, not our quote. Prices exclude VAT and depend on the balcony and access.

The bottom line: choosing a balcony or terrace floor

For a UAE balcony or terrace, WPC composite decking is the practical lead: waterproof, UV-stabilised, around 25 years of life, and cooler underfoot than tile in a light capped tone. Artificial grass makes a soft green corner, and interlocking deck tiles are the renter-friendly choice that lifts and moves with no drilling. Whichever you pick, hold on to two honest truths: nothing stays genuinely cool in peak July sun, so lighter tones and shade are what help, and the surface does not waterproof the balcony, the membrane and the falls to the drain underneath do that, and the floor must never block them. Porcelain pavers still suit a buyer set on a hard, premium paved terrace, and we will say so even though we fit composite and grass. Match the surface to your space, and a free site visit will confirm the right floor and check the waterproofing and drainage beneath it.
