Wood flooring in a Dubai living room

What Is Wood Flooring?

Wood flooring is a natural timber floor made from real wood, available as solid hardwood planks or engineered boards with a real-wood top layer. Also called wooden, hardwood or timber flooring, it adds warmth, character and lasting value to a home. Urban Flooring supplies and fits it across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

A real wood floor is an investment in a home, which is why the choice of type, species and finish matters, and why honest advice about how each behaves in the UAE climate matters even more. The rest of this page covers it.

Types of Wood Flooring

Three main types of real wood floor, each with its own strengths.

Solid hardwood flooring planks

Solid Hardwood

Real wood, refinishable for decades Solid wood flooring is milled from a single piece of timber: real, natural wood plank flooring that can be sanded and refinished many times, a premium floor that lasts decades.
Engineered wood flooring board cross-section

Engineered Wood

Stable, UAE-friendly A real-wood top layer bonded to a stable plywood core, more resistant to humidity and air conditioning, often the smarter choice for UAE homes. See our engineered wood flooring page.
Parquet herringbone wood flooring

Parquet

Patterned and decorative Wood blocks laid in patterns like herringbone and chevron for a classic, decorative finish. See our parquet flooring page.

Wood Species and Finishes

Species

Oak wood flooring
Oak The most popular and versatile, durable at a sensible cost.
Walnut wood flooring
Walnut Rich, dark and premium for luxury interiors.
Maple and ash wood flooring
Maple & Ash Lighter, clean-grained tones.
Teak wood flooring
Teak Naturally oily and the most moisture-resistant, well suited to the UAE.

Finishes

Matt, satin and gloss; brushed and textured; oiled or lacquered; in natural, light, dark and grey-washed tones. In our experience, oak suits most UAE interiors for its balance of durability and looks.

Is Wood Flooring Right for the UAE Climate?

An honest answer matters more than a sales pitch here.

Solid woodReacts to humidity and heat. It performs well in controlled, air-conditioned interiors, especially villas and luxury homes, with proper acclimatisation and care.
Engineered woodMore dimensionally stable, engineered copes better with UAE humidity and constant air conditioning, which is why it is often the practical choice. On UAE jobs we have seen solid wood gap between planks and lift where the AC and humidity swing, the kind of movement an engineered core handles far better. See our engineered wood flooring page.

We advise honestly on which suits your space. Sometimes engineered wood, or another floor entirely, is the better call, and we will tell you so.

Where Wood Flooring Works

Wood is a beautiful floor in the right rooms, and the wrong choice in others. We are upfront about both.

Wood flooring in a living room and majlis
Suits Living rooms, bedrooms, majlis, dining rooms, studies, and on the commercial side hotels, boutiques and executive offices, where warmth and a premium look matter.
Wood flooring used with care near a kitchen
Use with care, or avoid Bathrooms, kitchens with frequent spills, wet areas and unshaded sun-rooms, where moisture and direct heat work against real wood. For those spaces we usually suggest a waterproof alternative and say so up front.

How We Fit Your Wood Floor

Real wood needs careful preparation. Our process:

Installer fitting wood flooring in Dubai
  1. Free consultationType, species and finish advice.
  2. Free site measurementAccurate measure and a written quote.
  3. AcclimatisationWood is left to adjust to your home's humidity and temperature before a board goes down. Skip it and the floor can gap, buckle or lift at the joints within weeks, the step rushed jobs cut, and the one we are most often called back to fix.
  4. Professional installationNail, glue or floating fit, plus sanding and finishing where needed.
  5. Aftercare adviceCare and maintenance guidance.

Most wood floors take two to five days, including acclimatisation and finishing.

Caring for Wood Flooring in the UAE

Wood-floor care in the UAE is mostly about water and stability. Sweep or vacuum regularly, wipe spills promptly, and damp-mop rather than wet-mop, the mistake we see most is too much water, which shortens a floor's life here faster than anything else. Use felt pads under furniture to stop scratches, and keep your indoor humidity and air conditioning steady rather than letting them swing, since that movement is what opens gaps and lifts joints. Re-oil or re-sand solid wood over the years to refresh it. Looked after this way, a real wood floor lasts decades.

Wood Flooring FAQs

Which wood flooring is best for homes in Dubai?

For most Dubai homes, engineered wood is the practical choice: its stable core copes better with humidity and air conditioning. Solid hardwood suits villas and luxury interiors kept under steady climate control. We assess your space and advise honestly between the two during a free measurement.

What is the difference between solid and engineered wood?

Solid wood is milled from one piece of timber and can be sanded many times, lasting decades. Engineered wood has a real-wood top layer on a stable plywood core, which resists humidity and AC movement better. Both look like real wood, because both are. We help you choose.

Is real wood flooring suitable for the UAE climate?

Yes, with the right choice. Engineered wood handles UAE humidity and air conditioning very well. Solid wood also works when properly acclimatised, professionally fitted and kept in controlled indoor conditions. We advise on the best option, and on where another floor may suit better.

How much does wood flooring cost in Dubai?

As an indicative guide, supply and fit runs from around AED 100/sqm (about AED 9.3/sqft) for engineered wood, AED 150 to 500/sqm for solid hardwood, and AED 80 to 400/sqm for parquet depending on pattern. Final cost depends on species and finish. Request a free measurement.

What wood species and colours are available?

Oak is the most popular for its strength and versatility, with walnut, maple, ash and teak also available. Finishes range from matt to gloss, brushed or smooth, in natural, light, dark and grey-washed tones. We bring samples so you can see the grain before deciding.

Can wood floors be sanded and refinished?

Solid hardwood can be sanded and refinished many times over its life, refreshing the surface and extending it for decades. Engineered wood can usually be refinished once or twice, depending on its top-layer thickness. We advise on what your floor allows.

Where should wood flooring not be used?

Wood is best kept out of bathrooms, wet areas and kitchens with frequent spills, where moisture can damage it over time. For those spaces we usually suggest a waterproof floor such as vinyl or tile. We are happy to advise on the right floor for each room.

Do you supply only, or also install?

Both. Urban Flooring is a supply-and-installation company. One team handles species and finish advice, measurement, acclimatisation and fitting, so there is a single point of accountability. Supply-only orders are possible if you have your own fitter. Free site measurement comes as standard.
