What Is a Runner Rug?
A runner rug is a long, narrow loose rug for hallways, corridors, kitchens and staircases. It protects and softens high-traffic strips where a full rug would not fit, comes in standard widths and lengths or is cut to a custom length, and is usually paired with an anti-slip pad for grip. Urban Flooring supplies, custom-cuts and delivers runner rugs across the UAE.
Where Runner Rugs Work

Kitchens
Comfort where you stand most and a catch for spills, best in a washable synthetic given the traffic and splashes.
Entryways
Just inside the door, a runner catches sand and dust before it travels through the home, a real advantage in the UAE.
Staircases
Laid down the centre of the treads as a loose stair runner for grip and quiet, covered in the next section, since a loose stair runner and a fitted stair carpet differ.Runner Rug Sizes and Lengths
Runners are defined by a narrow width and a long length. Standard widths run from around 60 to 90 cm (about 2' to 3'), with common ready-made lengths of 200 cm, 240 cm and 300 cm (about 6'7", 7'10" and 9'10").
For a hallway, the rule is to leave a margin of bare floor on each side and at each end, roughly 10 to 20 cm (about 4" to 8") of floor showing all around, so the runner looks intentional rather than wall-to-wall. Measure the length of the run, subtract that end margin, and that is your runner length. Long UAE villa corridors often exceed standard lengths, which is where a custom cut is the clean answer.

Stair Runner Rugs vs Fitted Stair Carpet
Both put a soft surface on your stairs, but they are different products, and the right one depends on how permanent you want it.
Stair runner rug (loose)
A stair runner rug is a loose runner laid down the centre of the treads, usually with an anti-slip pad or rods. It leaves the edges of each step showing, can be lifted and cleaned or replaced, and suits renters or anyone who wants the look without a permanent fit.
Fitted stair carpet (secured)
A fitted stair carpet is installed to the staircase, wrapped over each tread and riser and fixed in place, edge to edge or as a fitted runner band. It is the more secure, permanent and safest option, particularly on a busy family staircase or where slips are a concern. If you want a permanent, fully secured stair covering rather than a loose piece, a fitted stair carpet is the honest recommendation, and we fit those too.
The short version: a runner for a movable, edges-showing look; fitted stair carpet for a permanent, fully secured finish.
Custom-Length Runners
Hallways and corridors rarely match a standard runner length, so most runners we supply for villas are cut to measure. We produce custom-length runners cut and edge-bound to your exact run, in your choice of width, colour and pattern, so the runner fits the space with a clean margin rather than folding at the end or falling short.
Materials and Anti-Slip
Materials
Synthetics (polypropylene, polyester, nylon) are hard-wearing, washable and the practical choice for kitchens, entryways and high-traffic halls. Wool is softer and more premium for a formal hallway, but needs professional cleaning. Flat, low-pile weaves suit runners best, since they take traffic well and do not trip.
Anti-slip
A runner on a hard floor must not slide, so we pair it with an anti-slip underlay pad cut to size. The pad grips the runner to marble, tile or wood, stops it creeping or rucking, and adds a little cushioning. On stairs we use anti-slip pads or rods to hold the runner securely on each tread. This is a safety point, not an optional extra, and we include it as standard.
Why Urban Flooring for Runner Rugs
Frequently Asked Questions
What length runner do I need for a hallway?
Measure the length of the run and leave a margin of bare floor at each end, roughly 10 to 20 cm (about 4" to 8"), so the runner looks intentional. Subtract that from the run length for your runner size. Common ready-made lengths are 200, 240 and 300 cm; longer corridors are cut to measure.
Do runner rugs slip, and how do I stop it?
On a hard floor they will slide without help, so an anti-slip underlay pad cut to the runner size is essential. It grips the runner to marble, tile or wood, stops creeping and rucking, and adds cushioning. On stairs we use anti-slip pads or rods. We supply the right fixing with every runner as standard.
Can you make a runner in a custom length?
Yes, and most villa runners are made this way. We cut and edge-bind a runner to your exact hallway, corridor or stair length, in your choice of width, colour and pattern. We measure on site free of charge, confirm the specification in writing, then produce and deliver the finished runner.
Stair runner rug or fitted stair carpet, which should I choose?
A loose stair runner rug lays down the centre of the treads with an anti-slip fixing, leaves the step edges showing, and can be lifted or replaced, good for renters or a quick update. A fitted stair carpet is wrapped and secured to each step, more permanent and safest for busy family stairs. We supply both.
Are runner rugs good for kitchens?
Yes, in the right material. A washable synthetic runner in front of the counter or sink adds comfort where you stand and catches spills, and wipes or washes clean. Avoid wool and delicate fibres in a kitchen, where splashes and traffic are constant. We steer you to a practical, easy-clean runner for the space.
How do I clean a runner rug?
Vacuum regularly along its length, and blot spills straight away rather than rubbing. Synthetic runners tolerate gentle washing and spot-cleaning, which is why they suit kitchens and entryways; wool needs professional cleaning. Lift the runner and its anti-slip pad occasionally to clean the floor beneath. We give care guidance for your specific runner.
How much do runner rugs cost in Dubai?
As an indicative guide, a short ready-made runner starts from around AED 150, while custom-cut runners are typically quoted from around AED 250 to 300 per linear metre depending on width and material. Length, width and fibre drive the price. Request a free measurement for your hallway or stairs for an exact quote.
Do you deliver and place runner rugs across Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
Yes. We deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE, and lay the runner in place with its anti-slip fixing rather than leaving it at the door. For stair runners and long corridors, our team positions and secures the piece so it sits straight and safe.
