What Is SPC Flooring?
SPC flooring, or stone plastic composite, is a rigid form of vinyl flooring built around a dense core of limestone powder and PVC. It is fully waterproof, dent and scratch resistant and stays dimensionally stable in heat, which makes it one of the most popular floors in Dubai for kitchens, bathrooms and high-traffic spaces.
SPC is part of the wider vinyl flooring family, but it sits at the rigid end. Where standard vinyl flexes, the stone-composite core stays firm, so it copes with heat, minor subfloor imperfections and heavy use better than softer formats.
It is sometimes sold as spc vinyl plank flooring, but the construction is what matters: a rigid core changes how the floor behaves underfoot and over the years, which is what the rest of this page explains.
Types of SPC Flooring
SPC is not a single product. It varies by core thickness, wear layer, backing and format, and those four choices decide how it performs and what it costs. Core thickness runs from about 4mm to 8mm, wear layers from 0.3mm to 0.5mm (12 to 20 mil) and above, and most planks arrive with acoustic backing already bonded on.
By Thickness & Grade

By Wear Layer

The wear layer, not the total thickness, decides scratch and traffic resistance over time.
Wear layers are also classified by intended use. EN ISO 10874 sets use classes for resilient floors, running from class 21 to 23 for domestic use and 31 to 34 for commercial, with the class rising as traffic increases. Tell us the class your specification calls for and we will supply to it.

How SPC Flooring Is Made
SPC is built from four bonded layers: a UV-cured wear layer on top, a high-definition decorative film, the rigid limestone-and-PVC core, and an IXPE or EVA acoustic backing. The core is what separates SPC from flexible vinyl and gives it heat stability and dent resistance.

That rigid core is what separates SPC from flexible vinyl and gives it its heat stability.
SPC Flooring Colours
SPC comes in a wide palette of wood and stone looks. These are five of the most popular tones for UAE homes and offices. Grey and white oak lead for modern interiors, with warmer naturals and darker walnut and espresso for a richer feel.

Beyond these, SPC is available in stone, marble and concrete looks in tile format, and custom tones can be matched to your scheme. Ask to see full samples during your free measurement.
SPC vs LVT vs Standard Vinyl
All three are vinyl, and the difference is the core. SPC has a rigid stone-composite core that resists dents and heat, LVT has a flexible core that feels softer and quieter underfoot, and standard vinyl is the thinnest and cheapest of the three. SPC suits kitchens and high traffic; LVT suits bedrooms and quiet rooms.
| Feature | SPC | LVT | Standard Vinyl |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Rigid stone | Flexible | Flexible / none |
| Waterproof | 100% | 100% (most) | Most |
| Dent resistance | Highest | Good | Moderate |
| Heat stability | Excellent | Good | Lower |
| Underfoot feel | Firm, quiet* | Soft, quiet | Soft |
| Best for | Kitchens, high traffic, commercial | Living areas, quiet rooms | Budget, rental rooms |
*with IXPE backing.
In short, SPC is the toughest and most heat-stable of the three, which is why it leads in kitchens, wet areas and commercial spaces. For softer, quieter rooms, LVT flooring is worth comparing, and our SPC vs LVT comparison weighs the two on cost, comfort and durability. The full vinyl flooring range covers every format.
Why SPC Flooring Suits the UAE
SPC suits the UAE because its dense stone-composite core stays dimensionally stable through the heat and humidity swings that make flexible vinyl expand and lift. It is fully waterproof for kitchens and bathrooms, resists dents from furniture and castors, and it lays straight over sound, level tile in most rooms.
Dimensional stability is a measurable property, not a marketing claim. Resilient floors are tested for it under EN ISO 23999, which measures how much a floor moves and curls after exposure to heat. Ask any supplier for that figure on the specific range you are quoted, and we will provide it for ours.
Where SPC Flooring Works
SPC's rigid waterproof core makes it one of the most versatile floors for UAE spaces, from homes to heavy commercial use. The same plank can run from a kitchen to a hallway to a stairway without a change of material, and the waterproof core means wet areas need no separate specification.

SPC Flooring FAQs
Is SPC flooring a good choice for Dubai homes?
Yes, for most rooms. SPC is waterproof, dent resistant and heat stable, which makes it well suited to UAE kitchens, bathrooms, living areas and high-traffic spaces. It handles villas and busy family homes comfortably. For the softest, quietest feel underfoot, LVT may suit bedrooms better, and we advise during your free measurement.
What does SPC stand for in flooring?
SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite, sometimes called Stone Polymer Composite. It is a rigid form of vinyl flooring built around a dense core of limestone powder and PVC. That stone core is what makes SPC fully waterproof, dent resistant and dimensionally stable in heat, unlike softer flexible vinyl. The full name explains the material: stone for the rigid core, plastic for the PVC binder, composite for the layered build.
Is SPC flooring waterproof?
Yes, SPC is 100% waterproof thanks to its solid stone-composite core, which does not absorb water. That makes it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas and other wet or humid spaces common in UAE homes under constant air conditioning.
SPC or LVT flooring, which is better?
Both are vinyl, and neither is better outright, they suit different rooms. SPC has a rigid stone-composite core, so it is harder, more dent resistant and more heat stable, which makes it the safer choice for kitchens, hallways and high-traffic or sun-facing rooms. LVT is more flexible with a softer, quieter, warmer feel underfoot, better for living rooms and bedrooms. For a full side-by-side, see our SPC vs LVT comparison. We help you choose room by room during a free site visit.
What thickness of SPC flooring should I choose?
For most UAE homes, a 5mm to 6mm core is the right choice, balancing comfort underfoot with durability. Around 4mm suits light residential use and lower traffic, while 7mm and 8mm cores suit heavy-traffic homes and commercial floors. Remember that the wear layer, not the total thickness, decides scratch and traffic resistance over time.
Does SPC flooring need underlay?
Most SPC planks we supply come with IXPE or EVA underlay already bonded to the back, so no separate underlay is needed. That attached layer softens sound and step and evens out minor subfloor variation. Where planks come without a backing, a thin separate underlay is used instead. The subfloor still needs to be sound and flat either way.
How long does SPC flooring last?
Quality SPC typically lasts 15 to 25 years or more depending on the wear layer, traffic and maintenance. Its rigid core and tough surface hold up well in UAE conditions, and many SPC products carry long manufacturer warranties for residential and commercial use.
Can SPC flooring be installed over existing tiles?
Often yes. SPC click-lock planks float over sound, level tile, which avoids the cost and mess of removal. The subfloor must be clean, dry and flat first. We assess your existing floor during the free measurement and advise on any preparation needed.
Does SPC flooring expand or warp in Dubai heat?
SPC is one of the most heat-stable vinyl floors because its rigid stone-composite core resists expansion far better than flexible vinyl. Fitted correctly with the right expansion gaps, it stays stable in UAE temperatures, particularly indoors under air conditioning.
Is SPC flooring cheaper than vinyl?
SPC usually costs a little more than basic flexible vinyl because of its rigid core, but less than premium wood. As an indicative guide, supply and fit runs from around AED 35/sqm (about AED 3.3/sqft) for budget grades. Request a quote for an exact figure.
How much does SPC flooring cost in Dubai?
Supply and fit for SPC flooring in Dubai runs from around AED 35/sqm to AED 150/sqm (about AED 3.3 to 14.0/sqft). Budget grades around 4mm sit at the lower end, mid-range 5mm to 6mm cores in the middle, and premium heavy-wear grades at the top. Exact cost depends on the range, the area and the subfloor. Request a free measurement for a precise quote.
Do you supply only, or also install?
Both. Urban Flooring is a supply-and-installation company. One team handles material advice, measurement and fitting, so there is a single point of accountability. Supply-only orders are possible if you already have your own installer. Free site measurement comes as standard.
How do you clean and maintain SPC flooring?
Sweep or vacuum regularly and clean with a damp mop and a pH-neutral floor cleaner. Because the core is waterproof, SPC handles damp mopping that would damage wood or laminate, though standing water should still be wiped up. Avoid steam mops, abrasive pads and wax polishes. Felt pads under furniture legs prevent most surface scratching.
Can SPC flooring be used outdoors?
No, SPC is an indoor floor. Direct sun and outdoor heat cause it to expand, fade and fail, and manufacturers exclude open outdoor areas, pools and saunas from warranty. For terraces, balconies and gardens we fit WPC decking instead, which is built for the UAE climate and sun. SPC is ideal for any indoor room, including kitchens and bathrooms.
Does SPC flooring come in sheets or rolls?
No, SPC is a rigid plank or tile that clicks together, not a sheet or roll. The stone-composite core is what makes it rigid, so it cannot be rolled like flexible vinyl. If you are after sheet or roll flooring, that is standard vinyl, which we supply on our PVC and sheet vinyl page. SPC gives you the waterproof performance in a rigid, click-together board.
