Large area rug under a living room seating group in a Dubai villa

What Is an Area Rug?

An area rug is a loose rug that defines a seating or bed zone and sits over your existing floor, used in living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas. It comes in standard sizes, large sizes and custom-made to the room, in wool for softness or easy-clean synthetic for busy homes. Urban Flooring supplies, custom-makes and delivers area rugs across the UAE.

Area Rug Sizes and How to Choose

The most common mistake with an area rug is buying it too small. A rug should anchor the furniture, not float like a mat in the middle of the floor. The simplest guide is where the furniture legs sit.

Living room with all sofa and armchair legs resting on a large area rug
All legs on The most generous, pulled-together look. Every furniture leg sits on the rug, which needs a larger size.
Living room with only the front sofa legs resting on the area rug
Front legs on The usual compromise, and it works well in most living rooms: front legs on the rug, back legs on the floor.
Small accent area rug sitting entirely within a seating group with all furniture legs off it
All legs off The rug sits entirely within the seating. This only suits small accent placements.

Common area-rug sizes run from 160 x 230 cm (about 5'3" x 7'7") for a smaller room, through 200 x 290 cm (about 6'7" x 9'6") for a typical living room, up to 240 x 340 cm (about 7'10" x 11'2") and 300 x 400 cm (about 9'10" x 13'1") for large villa spaces. If none fits cleanly, we make it to measure.

Living Room Rugs

In a living room, size the rug to the seating group, not the room. Aim for the rug to sit under the front legs of the sofas and armchairs so it ties the setting together, with the coffee table fully on it. For an open-plan villa living area, a larger rug with all legs on defines the zone more strongly and stops the seating drifting.

For most UAE living rooms, a 200 x 290 cm or 240 x 340 cm rug is the safe starting point, but a free measurement removes the guesswork.

Bedroom Rugs

In a bedroom, the rug is about what your feet land on when you get up. Two placements work: a single large rug set under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it extends well past both sides and the foot, or a pair of smaller runners down each side of the bed.

For a king bed, a 240 x 340 cm rug under it gives a comfortable margin on all three open sides. Softer, higher-pile rugs suit bedrooms, where comfort underfoot matters more than heavy-traffic durability.

Materials and Styles

Wool

Soft, naturally stain-resistant, hard-wearing and holds its look for years. It costs more and needs professional cleaning, but it is the quality choice for a living room or bedroom.

Synthetics

Polypropylene, polyester and nylon are hard-wearing, easy to clean and far cheaper, the sensible pick for busy family rooms, kids and pets. They do not have wool's feel or longevity, and we will say so rather than oversell them.

On style, we supply modern plain and geometric rugs, designer patterns, traditional looks, round rugs for a reading corner or under a round table, and dining rugs sized so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For deep-pile softness see shaggy rugs, and for hand-knotted traditional pieces see persian and oriental rugs.

Custom-Size and Other Rug Types

If your room falls between standard sizes, or you want a specific shape, colour or border, we make area rugs to measure, cut and bound to your exact dimensions. Full detail is on our custom-size area rugs page.

If you are choosing by feel rather than size, two siblings are worth a look: shaggy rugs for maximum softness underfoot, and persian and oriental rugs for handmade wool and silk pieces. For the full picture, see our full rug range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug do I need for a living room?

Size it to the seating group. For most UAE living rooms, a 200 x 290 cm (about 6'7" x 9'6") or 240 x 340 cm (about 7'10" x 11'2") rug works, with the front legs of the sofas on it and the coffee table fully on. Open-plan villa areas suit a larger, all-legs-on rug.

What size rug goes under a bed?

For a king bed, a 240 x 340 cm (about 7'10" x 11'2") rug set under the lower two-thirds gives a comfortable margin down both sides and the foot. Alternatively, use a pair of runners either side of the bed. The aim is a soft surface where your feet land.

Wool or synthetic, which area rug is better?

Wool is softer, more durable and naturally stain-resistant, and it holds its look for years, but it costs more and needs professional cleaning. Synthetics are cheaper, hard-wearing and easy to clean, ideal for busy family rooms, kids and pets. We match the fibre to how the room is used rather than to the price.

Can you make an area rug in a custom size?

Yes. If your room falls between standard sizes or needs a particular shape, colour or border, we cut and bind an area rug to your exact measurements. We measure on site free of charge, confirm the specification in writing, then produce and deliver the finished rug.

How do I stop an area rug slipping?

Use a proper anti-slip underlay pad cut to the rug size. It grips the rug to the floor, stops rucking and creeping, adds a little cushioning underfoot, and protects the floor beneath. We supply the right pad with the rug and size it correctly, which also makes the rug feel more substantial to walk on.

How do I clean an area rug?

Vacuum regularly, blot spills straight away rather than rubbing, and rotate the rug every few months so wear and sunlight fall evenly. Synthetics tolerate gentle washing and spot-cleaning; wool and silk need professional cleaning. We give care guidance for your specific fibre when we deliver.

How much do area rugs cost in Dubai?

As an indicative guide, a mid-size synthetic area rug starts from around AED 150, a large synthetic from around AED 330, and wool pieces run from roughly AED 1,100 for mid sizes upward, with hand-knotted premium higher again. Size and material drive the price. Request a free quote for your room.

Do you deliver and place area rugs across Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Yes. We deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE, and place the rug in the room rather than leaving it at the door. For large rugs we position and settle the piece so it lies flat and sits correctly under the furniture.
