Colourful EPDM wet-pour playground surface in Dubai

What Is EPDM Flooring?

EPDM flooring is a coloured, UV-stable synthetic rubber surface used for playgrounds, outdoor areas and sports surfaces. Also known as wetpour, wet pour surfacing, rubber safety surfacing, rubber playground flooring or a soft play surface, it is laid as poured-in-place wet-pour safety surfacing or as rubber tiles, cushions falls, drains water and resists fading in the sun. Urban Flooring supplies and fits EPDM surfacing across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

It is one type of rubber flooring, the grade made for outdoors and safety. What it is used for, and how the safety side works, comes next.

What EPDM Flooring Is Used For

EPDM is the go-to surface where safety, colour and weather resistance matter outdoors. Five uses cover almost everything we fit: playground safety surfacing for schools, nurseries and parks; continuous wet-pour poured on site to any shape; splash pads and pool surrounds where the surface must drain and stay grippy underfoot; outdoor sports areas and MUGAs; and bonded rubber mulch for a natural landscaped finish.

Wet-Pour Surfacing and Fall Safety

For playgrounds, the surface is a safety system, not just a floor. The depth of the surface is set by the critical fall height, meaning the highest point a child could fall from on the equipment above it. A low toddler frame may need around 40mm, while tall climbing equipment can need 90mm or more. Depth is the decision that matters most.

Critical fall heightThe surface is specified to the height children could fall from the equipment, the taller the equipment, the deeper the surface.
Depth and protectionA low toddler frame may need around 40mm, while tall climbing equipment can need 90mm or more to absorb the impact safely.
ConstructionA shock-absorbing SBR rubber base topped with a coloured EPDM wear layer, poured in place over a prepared, free-draining base.
StandardsEN 1177 is the European test that determines critical fall height, dropping an instrumented headform onto a surface sample to measure how much impact it absorbs. Playground surfacing is specified against it. Ask for the tested fall height of any surface you are quoted, and the depth it was tested at.

In our experience, matching depth to the equipment fall height is the single most important decision on a playground surface.

Wet-Pour, Tiles or Mulch

Three ways to lay EPDM, matched to the area and the design. Wet-pour is poured and troweled on site, so it takes any shape with no joins, which suits playgrounds and custom designs. EPDM tiles are modular, come in set thicknesses and lift again, which suits smaller areas, rooftops and pool surrounds. Bonded rubber mulch gives a loose, natural landscaped look.

Wet-Pour (Poured-in-Place)

EPDM rubber colour and design options

Outdoor note: all use UV-stable EPDM that resists UAE sun, unlike standard indoor rubber. EPDM is also used as a coloured top layer on indoor gym flooring, see our gym flooring page.

Where Wet-Pour Falls Short

Wet-pour is poured in place, so it cannot be lifted. Changing a layout, or repairing a damaged area, means cutting that section out and pouring again, and a re-poured section will not colour-match the original exactly. Where a surface may need lifting, extending or reconfiguring later, EPDM rubber tiles are the better call, and they are in the price table above.

Why Choose EPDM

EPDM earns its place outdoors on one property above the others: the colour is through the rubber granule, not painted on, so it holds up in UAE sun instead of fading grey the way cheap recycled rubber does. Everything else follows from that, the impact cushioning, the drainage and the joint-free finish.

UV-Stable ColourStays vibrant in UAE sun, does not fade to grey like cheap rubber.
Impact-Absorbing BuildAn SBR cushion layer under the EPDM wear layer, poured to the specified depth.
Free-Draining SurfaceWater drains through the surface rather than sitting on it.
Continuous & JointlessWet-pour has no joins or edges to lift.
Colours & DesignsWide palette, patterns, logos and markings.
Weather-Resistant & DurableBuilt for years of outdoor UAE use.

EPDM & Playground Flooring Prices in Dubai

EPDM cost depends on the type, and for wet-pour mainly on the depth, which is set by the fall height. Supplied and fitted, EPDM rubber tiles run from around AED 90/sqm (about AED 8.4/sqft), bonded rubber mulch from AED 100/sqm, and wet-pour from AED 120 to 250/sqm (about AED 11.1 to 23.2/sqft). Deeper wet-pour for taller equipment sits at the top of that range. Indicative supply-and-fit guide:

TypePer sqm (AED)Per sqft (AED approx)
EPDM rubber tiles90 to 1808.4 to 16.7
Bonded rubber mulch100 to 2009.3 to 18.6
Wet-pour (by depth / fall height)120 to 25011.1 to 23.2

Wet-pour price rises with depth, deeper surfaces for taller equipment cost more; final cost depends on area, base condition and design. Larger areas attract better rates.

How We Install EPDM Flooring

A safe EPDM surface starts with the base and the right depth for the fall height. We measure the fall zones on the site visit and set the depth from the equipment height, then prepare a free-draining sub-base with a shock pad where one is needed. The SBR base is poured and levelled, the coloured EPDM wear layer troweled over it, and the finished depth checked before handover.

EPDM & Playground Flooring FAQs

Is EPDM flooring good for UAE outdoors and playgrounds?

Yes, it is one of the best outdoor choices. EPDM is UV-stable, so it holds its colour in strong UAE sun where cheaper rubber fades and cracks, and it drains water and cushions falls. That makes it ideal for playgrounds, pool surrounds and sports areas. We specify the right grade and depth for each site.

What is EPDM playground surfacing?

EPDM playground surfacing is a poured rubber surface made from EPDM granules bound with resin, laid as a continuous cushioned layer over playgrounds, parks and nurseries. As a rubber surfacing it absorbs impact from falls, drains quickly and stays stable in UAE heat. The same wet pour rubber surfacing is used for splash pads, sports areas and rooftop play zones. We supply and install playground rubber surfacing across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

What is wet-pour rubber and how does it work?

Wet-pour is rubber surfacing poured and troweled in place: a shock-absorbing SBR base topped with a coloured EPDM wear layer. It cures into a continuous, jointless surface that can follow any shape and colour design, which is why it is the standard for playgrounds and bespoke safety areas.

How does playground flooring protect children from falls?

The surface absorbs the impact of a fall, and its depth is set to the height a child could fall from the equipment, known as the critical fall height (CFH). Total thickness typically runs from around 40mm for low toddler equipment to 90mm or more for tall climbing frames: the taller the equipment, the deeper the SBR cushion beneath the EPDM wear layer. Builds are specified against the EN 1177 impact standard. We measure the fall zones and specify the correct depth for the equipment height.

How much does playground or EPDM flooring cost in Dubai?

As an indicative guide, EPDM tiles run from around AED 90/sqm (about AED 8.4/sqft), and wet-pour from about AED 120 to 250/sqm (about AED 11.1 to 23.2/sqft) depending on the depth needed for the fall height. Area and base condition also matter. Request a free site visit.

EPDM wet-pour or rubber tiles, which is better?

Wet-pour gives a continuous, custom-shaped surface with no joins, ideal for playgrounds and bespoke designs. EPDM tiles are modular, quicker to lay and liftable, better for smaller areas, rooftops and pool surrounds. We recommend the right option for your site and budget.

Is EPDM flooring slip-resistant and safe for splash pads?

Yes. EPDM is slip-resistant even when wet and lets water drain through, which makes it well suited to splash pads, pool surrounds and wet play areas. It is also soft and barefoot-friendly, adding comfort and safety around water.

What colours and designs are available?

EPDM comes in a wide palette of over 20 colours, from vivid reds, blues and greens to earthy beige, brown and earth-yellow, plus pastels and multi-colour blends. Wet-pour lets us inlay hopscotch, number and letter grids, roadways, footprints, logos and game graphics within the surface. It is one of the most design-flexible floors we install, which suits schools, parks and branded spaces.

Do you supply only, or also install?

EPDM, and wet-pour in particular, is a specialist applied surface that needs professional installation and the correct depth for safety, so we supply and install it as a complete service. One team handles base, surfacing and getting the depth right for the fall height. Free site visit comes as standard.
