What Is Microcement?

Microcement is a thin, cement-based coating, enhanced with polymers, applied by hand in layers just 2mm to 3mm thick. It creates a continuous, matt, stone-like finish on floors and walls, and can go over existing tile or concrete. Urban Flooring supplies and applies microcement across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Because it is built up by hand rather than poured or laid, microcement wraps a whole space in one continuous surface, with no grout lines or joints, which is what gives it that calm, contemporary concrete look.

Where Microcement Can Be Applied

Microcement can be applied to floors, walls, bathrooms and wet rooms, stairs, kitchen splashbacks and built-in furniture, indoors and in shaded outdoor areas. Because each coat is only 2mm to 3mm thick, it goes over sound tile, concrete and screed without demolition, and the same finish can run from the floor up the wall as one continuous surface.

Floors

Continuous, no grout lines A continuous matt floor with no grout lines, over concrete or existing tile. Height gain is 2 to 3mm, so skirtings and door bottoms stay as they are and nothing is demolished.

Walls

One flowing surface Feature walls or full rooms, continuous with the floor for a single flowing surface. A wall takes the same coats as a floor but a lighter sealer, because it is not walked on.

Microcement vs Epoxy vs Polished Concrete

Microcement is a thin hand-applied cement overlay for floors and walls. Epoxy is a poured resin coating for floors only. Polished concrete is an existing slab ground and honed in place. Microcement suits homes and retail interiors, epoxy suits industrial and heavy-duty floors, and polished concrete needs a slab worth exposing. All three read as concrete.

Where Microcement Falls Short

Microcement is a decorative finish, not an industrial coating. For a warehouse, a workshop or a plant room taking forklift traffic, epoxy is the right specification and we fit that instead. It is also only as sound as the surface beneath it: because the coat is 2 to 3mm, movement in the substrate shows through as fine cracks, which is why the preparation matters more than the finish.

Where Microcement Works Best

Where microcement works best is decided by the surface underneath and by how hard the floor will be used. A sound, stable substrate and domestic or light commercial traffic suit it. A substrate that moves will telegraph through a 2mm to 3mm finish, and a floor taking pallet trucks or machinery needs a coating built for that instead.

Microcement is applied by hand in several coats, so it costs more than a basic coating, but it gives a space a distinctive, high-end finish. Price depends on the surfaces, their condition and the finish. Indicative supply-and-apply guide:

How We Apply Microcement

Microcement is a craft finish, worked by hand in thin layers, so the result depends on preparation and on curing time rather than on speed. The substrate has to be sound, clean and primed before any coat goes on, and each layer has to cure before the next. That drying time, not the trowelling, is what sets the schedule on site.

Adhesion decides whether a microcement floor lasts. The coating is bonded to the surface beneath it rather than laid loose, so its strength is the strength of that bond. EN 1542 is the European pull-off test used to measure it: a disc is bonded to the cured surface and pulled until it fails, and the result is reported in N/mm². Ask any applicator for the pull-off figure on their system's data sheet, and for how they prepare and prime existing tile before the base coats go on.

Is microcement a good choice for UAE homes?

Yes, especially for modern interiors. Microcement gives a continuous, contemporary concrete look on floors and walls, goes over existing tile with little disruption, and suits Dubai's appetite for minimalist design. Microcement vs epoxy, which is better?

Neither is better outright, they suit different jobs. Microcement, also written micro cement, is a thin cement-based overlay with a matt, stone-like look that works on both floors and walls, ideal for contemporary interiors. Can microcement be used on bathroom walls and floors, and is it waterproof?

Yes. Microcement is ideal for bathrooms and wet rooms, applied continuously across walls, floors and showers with no grout lines. The sealed finish keeps water off the coating, and the waterproofing comes from the tanking membrane beneath rather than from the microcement itself. That makes it a sound tile alternative, and the sealing and detailing at drains and corners decide whether a wet room holds. We handle both.

How much does microcement cost in Dubai?

As an indicative guide, supply and apply runs from around AED 150/sqm (about AED 13.9/sqft) for floors up to AED 500/sqm (about AED 46.5/sqft) for walls and wet rooms with detailed work. It is hand-applied in coats, so it costs more than a basic coating. Request a free site visit.

Can microcement go over existing tiles?

Yes, that is one of its main advantages. Microcement can be applied directly over sound existing tile, concrete or other stable surfaces, which avoids demolition and keeps height gain to a few millimetres. The existing surface must be clean, stable and properly prepared first.

Is microcement durable, and does it crack?

Properly applied and sealed, microcement is hard-wearing and lasts many years. Because it is a thin cement-based finish, movement in the substrate can cause fine cracks, which is why surface preparation and priming matter so much. We prepare the base carefully to keep the finish sound.

Does microcement need sealing and maintenance?

Yes. Microcement is sealed on application to protect it and make it water resistant, and the sealer benefits from renewing over time, especially in busy or wet areas. Day to day, it just needs sweeping and mopping with a mild cleaner. We provide aftercare guidance on handover.

Do you supply only, or also install?
