What Is an Outdoor Rug?
An outdoor rug is a loose rug made from weather-resistant synthetic fibre, for patios, balconies, gardens and pool areas. It is built to cope with UV, heat, water and mould, and can be hosed down and dried in the sun. Urban Flooring supplies outdoor rugs in standard and custom sizes, delivered across the UAE.
What Makes a Rug Outdoor-Safe in the UAE
An indoor rug put outside in the UAE fails fast: the sun bleaches it, damp brings mould, and wool or viscose degrades. An outdoor rug is a different build.
The fibre is UV-stabilised synthetic, so the colour holds under harsh sun instead of fading in a season. The weave is a flat, open construction that lets water drain through and dry rather than soaking and holding damp. The materials do not rot or grow mould the way natural fibres do, and dirt and dust rinse off with a hose. That combination, UV, water and mould resistance, is what lets a rug live outdoors year-round in this climate. Anything without all three belongs indoors.

Where Outdoor Rugs Work

Balconies
The quickest way to make an apartment balcony feel like a room, and light enough to lift and hose when needed.
Gardens and lawns
A defined surface for seating or a play area on grass or gravel.
Pool areas
A flatweave rug adds grip and comfort on wet paving and drains quickly, with the most open weave for the splash zone.Outdoor Rug Materials
Outdoor rugs are made from hard-wearing synthetics, most commonly polypropylene (PP), and increasingly PET made from recycled plastic. Both are UV-stabilised, water-resistant and easy to clean, usually in a flatweave construction, sometimes with a jute-look or textured finish.
Be honest with yourself on feel: these fibres are chosen for weather resistance, not softness, so an outdoor rug will never feel like a wool indoor rug underfoot. That is the right trade for a space that takes sun, water and dust. If you want plush comfort, that belongs indoors.
Sizes and Custom Outdoor Rugs
Common outdoor sizes run from around 160 x 230 cm (about 5'3" x 7'7") for a balcony, through 200 x 300 cm (about 6'7" x 9'10") for a patio seating area, up to larger sizes for a terrace or garden.
Balconies and terraces are rarely a standard shape, though, so outdoor rugs are often made to measure. We produce custom-size outdoor rugs cut and bound to your space, up to large widths, in your choice of colour and pattern.
Outdoor Rug or Artificial Grass: Which for a Terrace?
Both go outdoors, but they are different products for different jobs.
Outdoor rug (loose)
An outdoor rug is a loose piece. It sits on your existing paving, decking or grass, defines a seating or dining zone, and can be lifted, moved, hosed or taken with you. It suits renters, defined areas and anyone who wants to change the look seasonally.
Artificial grass (installed)
Artificial grass is an installed surface, fixed down to cover a whole area with a permanent green lawn-look finish, for gardens, play areas and full-terrace coverage. If you want to cover the whole space in a green surface rather than lay a movable piece, artificial grass is the right product, and we supply and install that too.
The short version: a rug for a defined, movable zone; grass for permanent, full coverage.
Why Urban Flooring for Outdoor Rugs
Frequently Asked Questions
Are outdoor rugs waterproof?
They are water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. The synthetic fibre does not absorb water like wool, and the open flatweave lets rain drain through and dry, so the rug copes with wet weather and hosing. It can still hold damp underneath if left flat on a wet surface, so lift and dry it occasionally to avoid mould beneath.
Do outdoor rugs fade in the UAE sun?
A genuine outdoor rug resists fading far better than an indoor one, because the fibre is UV-stabilised to hold colour under strong sun. Over years of direct, intense exposure some softening of colour is normal for any material, but a quality outdoor rug keeps its look for a long time where an indoor rug would bleach in a season.
Can outdoor rugs stay outside all year?
Yes, that is what they are built for. UV, water and mould resistance let them live outdoors through UAE summers and the occasional rain. To get the longest life, lift and dry the rug now and then, especially after heavy rain or washing, and shake or hose off sand and dust. No need to bring it in seasonally.
How do I clean an outdoor rug?
Easily. Shake or sweep off loose dirt and sand, then hose it down, using mild soap and a soft brush for stubborn marks. Rinse and let it dry flat or over a rail, ideally in the sun. The synthetic fibre and open weave are made for exactly this, which is a big part of why outdoor rugs suit UAE homes.
What material are outdoor rugs made of?
Almost always hard-wearing synthetics: polypropylene (PP) most commonly, and increasingly PET made from recycled plastic. Both are UV-stabilised, water-resistant, mould-resistant and easy to clean, usually woven flat. These fibres are chosen for weather resistance rather than softness, which is the right priority for an outdoor surface.
Outdoor rug or artificial grass, which for a terrace?
A rug if you want a defined, movable seating or dining zone on existing paving or decking. Artificial grass if you want to cover the whole terrace in a permanent green surface. One is loose and changeable, the other is installed and permanent. We supply both and will advise which suits your space.
How much do outdoor rugs cost in Dubai?
As an indicative guide, a small balcony outdoor rug starts from around AED 150, a standard patio size runs roughly AED 250 to 400, and large or custom-made pieces cost more by size. Size and construction drive the price. Request a free quote with your dimensions for an exact figure.
Do you deliver and place outdoor rugs across Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
Yes. We deliver across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE, and place the rug in your outdoor space rather than leaving it at the door. For large terrace and garden rugs, our team positions the piece so it lies flat and sits correctly on the surface.
