Polished terrazzo floor in a Dubai interior

What Is Terrazzo Flooring?

Terrazzo flooring is made from chips of marble, granite, glass or quartz set in a cement or epoxy binder, then ground and polished to a smooth, speckled surface. It can be poured in place for a continuous floor or laid as precast tiles. Urban Flooring supplies and fits terrazzo across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

It is one of the oldest decorative floors still in use, and one of the longest-lived. The two choices that shape a terrazzo floor, how it is laid and what binds the chips, are covered next.

Types of Terrazzo Flooring

Terrazzo varies two ways: how it is laid, and what binds the chips.

Poured in-situ terrazzo floor

Poured / In-Situ Terrazzo

Continuous, the original form Mixed and laid wet on site, then ground and polished into a continuous, jointless floor. The original and most durable form, premium and labour-intensive.
Precast terrazzo tiles

Precast Terrazzo Tiles

Faster, more affordable Factory-made terrazzo cut into tiles, laid like any tile. Faster to fit, more consistent and more affordable than poured.
Cement and epoxy terrazzo binder samples

Cement vs Epoxy Binder

The binder decision Cement terrazzo is traditional, heavy-duty and suits indoor and outdoor use. Epoxy terrazzo uses a resin binder, cures faster, offers more colours and is lighter for upper floors, but is for indoor use. See our epoxy flooring page for more on resin systems.

The Terrazzo Look

Aggregate sets the character: marble, granite, glass and even mother-of-pearl chips, in sizes from fine micro-chip to large Venetian-style. Binder colours and chip mixes can be tuned to almost any palette, and divider strips let you zone colours or set patterns. The result ranges from subtle and contemporary to bold and traditional.

Why Choose Terrazzo

Extremely Long-LastingTerrazzo floors last decades, often longer than the building's other finishes.
Continuous & HygienicPoured terrazzo has no joints to trap dirt.
Design-FlexibleA vast range of aggregate, colour and pattern options.
Low MaintenanceEasy to clean and re-polish when sealed.
TimelessA heritage material with a strong contemporary look.
A Premium FinishA characterful, high-design floor.

Honest note: poured terrazzo is a premium, slower install with skilled grinding and polishing, and like all stone it can feel hard and cool underfoot. Precast tiles are the faster, lower-cost route to the look.

Where Terrazzo Works

Villas and apartments, lobbies and entrances, retail and showrooms, hotels, restaurants and cafes, bathrooms and feature areas, and commercial and institutional spaces that want a durable, high-design floor.

Grinding, Polishing and Finish

The finish is where terrazzo is made. After curing, the surface is ground back to expose the aggregate, then polished through successive grits to the chosen sheen, from a soft matt to a high polish, and sealed for protection and stain resistance.

Terrazzo Flooring Prices in Dubai

Terrazzo price depends on the type, the aggregate and the finish. Indicative supply-and-fit guide:

How We Install Terrazzo

Terrazzo is specialist work, and the method depends on whether it is poured or precast.

Grinding and polishing a terrazzo floor in Dubai

Poured in-situ

  1. Base preparation and divider strips set out.
  2. Terrazzo mix poured, spread and compacted.
  3. Cured, then ground to expose the aggregate.
  4. Polished through grits and sealed.

Precast tiles

  1. Subfloor prepared and levelled.
  2. Tiles laid and set.
  3. Grouted, polished and sealed.

Poured terrazzo takes around two weeks including curing and polishing; precast tiles fit in a few days.

Terrazzo Flooring FAQs

Is terrazzo a good choice for homes and projects in Dubai?

Yes. Terrazzo is extremely durable, low-maintenance and design-flexible, which suits Dubai villas, lobbies, retail and hospitality spaces alike. Its speckled look works in both contemporary and classic interiors, and it lasts for decades. We advise on the right type and finish during a free site visit.

Poured terrazzo or terrazzo tiles, which is better?

Poured in-situ terrazzo gives a continuous, jointless floor and the longest life, but it is a premium, slower install. Precast terrazzo tiles are faster to fit and more affordable, with a very similar look. We recommend poured for large feature areas and tiles where speed and budget matter.

What is the difference between cement and epoxy terrazzo?

Cement terrazzo uses a traditional cement binder, is heavy-duty and works indoors and outdoors. Epoxy terrazzo uses a resin binder, cures faster, offers more colours and is lighter for upper floors, but is for indoor use only. We help you choose based on the space and the look you want.

How much does terrazzo flooring cost in Dubai?

As an indicative guide, supply and fit runs from around AED 100/sqm (about AED 9.3/sqft) for precast tiles, AED 120 to 200/sqm for poured cement terrazzo, and AED 150 to 260/sqm for epoxy terrazzo. Aggregate and design affect the price. Request a free site visit.

How long does terrazzo flooring last?

Terrazzo is one of the longest-lasting floors there is. A well-laid, sealed terrazzo floor lasts for decades, often outliving other finishes in the building, and can be re-polished to look new again. Its durability is a big reason it is used in high-traffic public spaces.

Can terrazzo be polished and restored?

Yes. Terrazzo can be re-ground and re-polished to remove wear, scratches and dullness, bringing an old floor back to life, which is one of its great advantages over most other floors. Resealing afterwards keeps it protected. We offer polishing and restoration as well as new installation.

Where can terrazzo be used, including bathrooms and walls?

Terrazzo suits floors throughout a home or project, and also works on walls, stairs, vanities and feature surfaces. Sealed terrazzo handles bathrooms and wet areas well. Its versatility across surfaces is part of why designers favour it. We advise on suitability for each area.

Do you supply only, or also install?

Terrazzo, especially poured in-situ, is specialist work that needs skilled laying, grinding and polishing, so we supply and install it as a complete service. One team handles the floor from preparation to final polish, so there is a single point of accountability. Free site visit comes as standard.
