What Is Rubber Flooring?
Rubber flooring is a durable, dense, shock-absorbing floor made from synthetic or recycled rubber, available as interlocking tiles, rolls, rubber matting and mats. Also searched as rubber matting, rubber mat or rubber floor matt, it comes in tile, roll and mat formats. It is used in gyms, commercial and industrial spaces, play areas and outdoor areas. Rubber is chosen for what it does underfoot: it cushions impact, deadens noise and grips when wet, which is why it turns up everywhere from weights rooms to nurseries. The format and grade are what you actually choose between.
Rubber Flooring Formats
Rubber flooring comes in three main formats, rubber floor tiles (also called rubber floor squares), rolls and mats, and the right one depends on the space and how it is used. Some buyers also call it rubber carpet flooring.
Rolls / Sheet

Rubber flooring has its own product standard. EN 1817 sets the specification for smooth rubber floor coverings, covering the requirements a sheet or tile is manufactured to before anyone decides which room it goes in. Asking whether a rubber floor is made to it separates a specified product from unbranded offcut rubber, which is worth doing on a commercial order.
Where Rubber Flooring Works
From a weights room to a rooftop terrace, the format, grade and thickness are matched to the space. Most of the rubber we fit goes into gyms and fitness spaces, where it protects the subfloor from dropped weights. Workshops, plant rooms and warehouses take the highest-density recycled grades, with anti-fatigue matting at standing workstations. Nurseries and schools take softer impact grades, and outdoor terraces take UV-stable EPDM.

Where Rubber Flooring Falls Short
Rubber is attacked by oils, fuels and solvents, so a workshop bay or a plant room that sees them is a resin floor rather than a rubber one, and our epoxy flooring page covers that. Recycled SBR also carries a rubber odour for the first few weeks in a closed, hot room, which matters most in a small home gym.

Rubber floor cost depends on the format, thickness and rubber type. Supplied and fitted, mats run from around AED 50/sqm (about AED 4.6/sqft), interlocking tiles from AED 55/sqm, and rolls or sheet from AED 70 up to AED 250/sqm (about AED 6.5 to 23.2/sqft). How We Fit Rubber Flooring
How rubber is fitted depends on the format and the space. Interlocking tiles are loose-laid and can be lifted or moved later. Mats are simply placed. Rolls are laid and seamed, and glued down where the traffic or the equipment needs a fixed floor. All three need a clean, level subfloor first, which we assess on the site visit.

Where is rubber flooring used, and is it good for the UAE?
Rubber flooring suits gyms, commercial and industrial spaces, play areas and outdoor zones. It is durable, dense and shock-absorbing, and outdoor EPDM grades handle UAE sun and heat well. It works wherever a tough, cushioned floor takes heavy use. We advise on the right type during a free site visit.
Rubber tiles or rolls, which is better?
Interlocking tiles are quick to lay, liftable and need no glue, ideal for changeable spaces and DIY. Rolls give a smoother, more continuous cover with fewer joins, better for large gyms and commercial floors. We recommend the right format for your space and budget during the visit.
Is rubber flooring good outdoors and in UAE heat?
Yes, with the right grade. UV-stable EPDM rubber is made for outdoor use and resists sun, heat and colour fade, which suits UAE terraces, rooftops, pool surrounds and play areas. Standard indoor rubber is not UV-stable, so we specify the correct outdoor grade for exposed areas.
How much does rubber flooring cost in Dubai?
As an indicative guide, supply and fit runs from around AED 50/sqm (about AED 4.6/sqft) for mats and interlocking tiles up to AED 250/sqm (about AED 23.2/sqft) for premium rolls and EPDM outdoor grades. Thickness and rubber type drive the price. Request a free site visit.
Is rubber flooring slip-resistant and safe?
Rubber is not slip rated, and we do not claim a rating for it. The surface is matt and textured rather than sealed and glossy, which is why it is specified for gyms, play areas and wet surrounds. In a play area, impact performance comes from the depth of the surface against the equipment height, not from the material on its own.
How thick should rubber flooring be?
It depends on the use. As a guide: 3mm to 6mm for light industrial, corridors and offices; 6mm to 10mm for cardio, anti-fatigue and general commercial; 10mm to 12mm for commercial floors and sound reduction; 15mm for home gyms and free weights; 20mm for commercial gyms and heavier lifting; and 30mm to 40mm or more for Olympic lifting. Playground surfaces are deeper again and set by equipment height, which our EPDM flooring page covers. We advise the right thickness during the visit.
Is rubber flooring easy to clean and maintain?
Yes. Day to day, rubber just needs sweeping or vacuuming and an occasional damp mop with a neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive tools, which can damage the surface. With simple care, rubber flooring lasts around 10 to 15 years.

Both. Urban Flooring is a supply-and-installation company. One team handles format and thickness advice, measurement and fitting, so there is a single point of accountability. Supply-only orders, including interlocking tiles for DIY, are possible. Free site visit comes as standard.
