Why This Villa Moved to Artificial Grass
A natural lawn in Sharjah is a running cost. Through summer it needs daily irrigation, regular feeding and cutting, and it still browns off in the worst months. This garden wraps three sides of the villa, including a strip that sits in full afternoon sun, so keeping real turf alive there would have meant a permanent watering routine.
Artificial grass removed that. The garden stays green through the year, needs no irrigation, and the family can use it in August without waiting for the sprinklers to finish.
The Grass, the Base and the Cutting-In
10mm artificial grass was laid across roughly 800 sqm, covering the front garden, the side lawn and the open ground beside the seating area. A short pile at this scale keeps the lawn easy to brush and rinse, which matters more on a garden this size than a deep pile does.
The existing ground was levelled and compacted to form a sub-base before any grass went down. That is the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a lawn stays flat. Grass laid straight onto loose ground ripples and moves within months, and no amount of care with the visible work makes up for it.
The detail work is what separates a good install from a poor one. The front garden has stepping stones set into the lawn, and each one was cut around individually so the grass meets the stone edge cleanly with no gaps and no visible joins. The same applied where the lawn meets the paved terrace and the boundary walls.
Pile direction was kept consistent across each run so the lawn reads as one surface rather than a set of panels.
Artificial grass does get warm in direct summer sun, more so than natural grass. In a garden like this, shade from the villa and the seating canopy keeps most of the lawn usable through the day, but it is worth knowing before choosing it for a fully exposed area.
The Finished Garden

Urban Flooring supplied and fitted the artificial grass only. The seating canopy, paving and landscaping shown were already in place.
Where Artificial Grass Suits a UAE Home
- Villa gardens and lawns that would otherwise need year-round irrigation
- Roof terraces and balconies where soil is not an option
- Around pools, where it is soft underfoot and drains after a splash, often alongside WPC decking on the terrace itself
- Play areas, over a shockpad where a fall height needs covering

Artificial Grass FAQs
How long does artificial grass last in the UAE climate?
A quality artificial grass with UV-stabilised fibres lasts around eight to twelve years in UAE conditions before the pile starts to flatten noticeably. Direct year-round sun is the main ageing factor, not foot traffic. Cheaper grass without proper UV treatment fades and goes brittle far sooner, often within three years.
Does artificial grass get too hot to walk on in summer?
It does get warmer than natural grass in direct sun, and in peak summer an exposed lawn can be uncomfortable barefoot in the middle of the day. Shade makes a large difference. Hosing it down cools it quickly. In a shaded or partly shaded garden it stays usable through most of the day.
What preparation does the ground need first?
Most of the work happens before any grass is visible. The ground is levelled and compacted to form a stable sub-base, and the perimeter is finished so the edges sit flat against paving, stone and boundary walls. Grass laid onto loose or uneven ground ripples within months, and no care with the visible work makes up for it.
How do you clean artificial grass?
Rinse it with a hose to clear dust, which in the UAE is the main thing it collects. A stiff brush lifts the pile back up in high-traffic areas. Pet waste is removed as normal and the area rinsed. There is no mowing, feeding or watering to keep it alive.
Can it go over an existing surface like tiles or concrete?
Yes, over a solid flat surface such as concrete or tiles, provided water can still drain. On a roof terrace or balcony this is the usual approach. The grass is fitted with a shockpad or foam underlay where comfort matters, and the drainage route is checked before anything is laid.
Does water drain through it?
Yes. Artificial grass is made with a perforated backing so rain and hose water pass through to the ground or drainage below. The ground preparation underneath matters as much as the grass itself, because water still needs somewhere to go once it has passed through.
Do you work in Sharjah as well as Dubai and Abu Dhabi?
Yes. Urban Flooring supplies and fits across all seven emirates, including Sharjah, Ajman and the northern emirates. Site visits and measurements are free wherever the project is. This villa garden in Al Suyoh is one of a number of projects completed outside Dubai.
Do you supply and install, or only supply?
Both. Urban Flooring is a supply-and-install company with an in-house team, so the team that measures and advises also carries out the work. Free site visits are standard across the UAE.
