Welded Sheet Vinyl Flooring in a Dubai Nursery
Urban Flooring supplied and fitted welded sheet vinyl through a KHDA-licensed nursery in Dubai. Colour is cut into the floor rather than printed on it, with curved fields across the play area and inlaid circles set into colour bands through the classrooms, each shape welded to the pieces around it.

Why Sheet Vinyl for a Nursery
A nursery floor takes more punishment than almost any commercial space. Spills happen constantly, everything gets cleaned every day, and the people using it spend most of their time sitting on it. Sheet vinyl handles that better than tiles or planks for one structural reason: it has almost no joints.
Sheet comes in wide rolls. The seams that remain are heat-welded with a matching cord, which fuses the sheets into one surface. Liquid cannot get between boards because there are no board edges to get between, which is why sheet vinyl is standard in nurseries, clinics and hospital corridors.
Colour is the second reason. Because the sheet is cut, a floor can carry any shape the design calls for, which is how the play area got its curved fields and the classrooms got their circles.
Cutting and Welding the Colour
The pattern in these photographs is not printed. Each colour is a separate piece of sheet vinyl, cut to shape on site and welded to its neighbours.
That is slow work and it is unforgiving. A curve cut slightly wide leaves a gap the weld has to fill, and a filled gap shows. The seams in the play area run through tight curves and still read as clean lines, which is the part worth looking at in the photograph.
A printed sheet would have produced a similar look on day one for a fraction of the labour. The difference is that a printed pattern sits in the wear layer, while a cut inlay goes through the material. There is no artwork to wear off, because the colour is the floor.
Welded sheet vinyl is not the cheapest way to cover a nursery floor and a multi-colour inlay design costs more again, because every shape is cut and welded by hand rather than laid from a box. Vinyl tiles or a single-colour sheet would have cost less. What the extra buys is a near-jointless surface and a design that is built into the material rather than applied to it.
The Classrooms
The classrooms use the same technique in a simpler geometry. Straight colour bands run across the floor in green, teal and yellow, with discs of contrasting colour inlaid into them at intervals.
Each circle is cut from one sheet and set into a matching hole cut in another, then welded around its full circumference. A disc is harder to fit well than a straight band, because the cut has to follow a continuous curve with no place to hide a correction. In the close photograph the welded line around each circle is visible if you look for it, and the disc sits flush with the surface around it.
The colour layout also does something practical. Bands and circles give staff visible reference points on an otherwise open floor, which is useful in a room where activities get zoned and rezoned through the day.

Urban Flooring supplied and fitted the sheet vinyl flooring. Furniture, joinery and wall finishes shown were already in place or fitted by others.
Where Sheet Vinyl Suits a UAE Setting
- Nurseries and schools, where the floor is cleaned daily and children sit on it
- Clinics and healthcare, where a near-jointless surface is the specification
- Commercial kitchens and wet areas, where water must not reach the subfloor
- Any space where the design calls for colour shapes rather than a single tone
Full detail on sheet formats, widths and indicative prices is on our PVC and sheet vinyl flooring page, and the wider range is covered on vinyl flooring. For play areas and outdoor surfacing we also fit rubber flooring and wet pour.
Nursery Sheet Vinyl FAQs
Why is sheet vinyl used in nurseries rather than tiles or planks?
Sheet vinyl comes in wide rolls, so a floor has very few joints, and the seams that remain are heat-welded into one continuous surface. Liquid cannot reach the subfloor through board edges because there are none. That matters in a room cleaned daily where children sit on the floor.
How long does sheet vinyl last in a nursery?
Commercial sheet vinyl is specified for heavy daily traffic, and lifespan depends mainly on the thickness of the wear layer and on how the floor is cleaned. A thicker wear layer and a pH-neutral cleaning routine extend it. Abrasive pads and strong solvents shorten it faster than foot traffic does.
Are the colours printed or cut?
Cut. Each colour is a separate piece of sheet vinyl, shaped on site and welded to the pieces around it. The circles in the classrooms are discs cut from one sheet and welded into holes cut in another. Nothing in these photographs is a printed pattern.
What is a welded seam and why does it matter?
Where two sheets meet, the joint is grooved out and a matching vinyl cord is melted into it, fusing the sheets into one surface. The result resists water and cleaning chemicals at the join. An unwelded seam is the point where a wet-area floor usually fails first.
Can sheet vinyl be fitted while a nursery is open?
It is possible but rarely sensible. Welding needs the area clear and the adhesive needs time before traffic. Most nursery work is done during a holiday closure or out of term. We plan the programme around the nursery calendar rather than the other way round.
Is sheet vinyl slip resistant?
Slip resistance is a graded property, not a yes or no. Slip-resistance ratings run from R9 to R13 under DIN 51130, and a specification will state the class required for each area. We supply to the rating a project calls for and confirm it against the product data before ordering.
How is a nursery sheet vinyl floor cleaned?
Sweep or vacuum, then damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner. Because the surface is welded and effectively jointless, it takes daily wet cleaning without water reaching the subfloor. Avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents, which dull the wear layer faster than foot traffic does.
Do you supply and install, or only supply?
Both. Urban Flooring is a supply-and-install company with an in-house team, so the team that measures and advises also carries out the work, including the cutting and welding. Free site visits are standard across the UAE, and commercial work is quoted around your operating calendar.
Specifying a Floor for a Nursery or School?
Send us the room areas and the specification you are working to and we will come back with a measured quote, including the slip rating and sheet build each area calls for. Site visits and measurements are free anywhere in the UAE.
