Carpet stair runner on a Dubai villa staircase

What Is Stair Carpet?

Stair carpet is carpet fitted to a staircase, either as a full wall-to-wall covering across each step or as a runner down the centre with the sides left exposed. It softens each step underfoot, cuts the noise of footsteps on the stairs, and is fitted by hand to the shape of every tread. Urban Flooring supplies and fits stair carpet and runners across Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The two choices that shape the job are how much of the stair the carpet covers, and how it is fitted around each step. Both are covered next.

Stair Runner or Full Stair Carpet?

The first choice is how much of the stair the carpet covers. A carpet runner runs down the centre of the steps, and a full carpet covers each step wall to wall. Both work as a carpet runner for steps, fitted and secured by our team.

Stair Carpet Fitting Styles

The second choice is how the carpet is fitted around each step. Waterfall runs the carpet straight over each step edge and drops to the next, which is simpler and more economical. Cap-and-band wraps it tightly around the contour of the tread and riser for a tailored finish that covers the nosing edge fully. Stair treads are individual pads on each step, leaving the riser bare.

Waterfall

Simpler, more economical

The carpet runs straight over the edge of each step and drops to the next, a simpler, more economical finish.

Cap-and-Band (Upholstered)

Tailored, and wraps every step

The carpet is wrapped tightly around the contour of each step, hugging the tread and riser, a tailored, premium finish. Because it wraps the nosing edge fully, it puts carpet over the part of the step that takes almost every footfall.

Relative cost is a comparison between the three styles, not a price. Exact cost depends on the staircase.

What Carpet Does on a Staircase

Carpet is a soft, textured covering laid over a hard structure. On stairs it is softer underfoot than a hard tread, cuts the noise of footsteps, and, over the right underlay, sits on a firm bed that does not shift under load. Bare wood, stone and tile stairs give none of those. Softness and quiet underfoot are what a household with young children or older family members is buying on a staircase.

Carpet and Slip Ratings

Carpet is not slip rated. The R scale used to rate hard flooring has no carpet equivalent, so a slip rating for a stair carpet is not something any supplier can produce. What a fitter actually controls is the underlay grade, a low dense pile that holds its shape at the nosing, and how tightly the covering is fixed at every tread and nose. Ask about those three.

Where Stair Carpet Falls Short

An open-tread or floating staircase cannot take a fitted carpet at all, because there is no riser to wrap and no continuous surface to fix to. Those stairs take a clad tread in wood or laminate instead. Carpet also wears at the nosing long before it wears on the tread, and in a home with young children it shows there first.

Choosing the Right Stair Carpet

Stairs are the highest-wear surface in a home, so the carpet for stairs needs to suit the job. Popular colours include grey, beige and neutral tones that hide wear, with wool and hard-wearing synthetic options:

  • Pile: a low, dense pile or loop (such as Berber) wears better on stair edges than a deep, soft plush.
  • Fibre: hard-wearing fibres like nylon, or wool for natural luxury, stand up to constant traffic. For the full fibre range, see our carpets page.
  • Width: runners come in widths to suit narrow or standard staircases.
  • Underlay: the right underlay adds cushioning and quiet on stairs, and beds the carpet down firmly.

Stair carpet fails at the nosing, not across the tread, because every step lands on the same narrow strip of bent carpet. What holds up there is how firmly the tufts are anchored. ISO 4919 measures that directly, pulling individual tufts from the backing and recording the force needed. A well-anchored carpet resists the pull at the step edge and, on a loop pile, stops a snagged loop running.

If you are weighing carpet against wood, laminate or tiles for the staircase, our best flooring for stairs guide compares the main options side by side.

Where Stair Carpet Works

Villa staircases, townhouse and duplex apartment stairs, landings and galleries, and commercial stairs in hotels, offices and lobbies. We fit straight, curved, split and spiral staircases. Villa and townhouse staircases take full carpet or a centre runner depending on whether the treads are worth showing. Duplex apartments usually take a runner. Hotel, office and lobby stairs take a hard-wearing contract grade.

Stair Carpet Prices in Dubai

Stair carpet is priced a little differently from room carpet: the carpet itself is priced by area, and stair fitting costs more than flat-floor fitting because each step is fitted by hand. Indicative supply-and-fit guide:

ItemIndicative range
Stair carpet (material)AED 60 to 250/sqm (about AED 5.6 to 23.2/sqft)
Stair fitting premiumHigher than flat rooms, priced per step or per staircase
Typical full staircaseAED 800 to 4,000+ supplied and fitted; premium full wool or cap-and-band staircases to around 6,000, by steps, material and style

Runners use less carpet than full coverage; wool and premium ranges sit higher; curved and spiral stairs take more skill and time.

How We Fit Stair Carpet

Stairs are the most demanding carpet fit in a home: every step is shaped and fixed by hand, so the fit has to be exact. We count the steps and assess the width and style on the site visit, lay stair-grade underlay for cushioning and a firm bed, then fit in your chosen style and fix the carpet tightly at every tread and nose. Curved and spiral staircases take more time and skill than straight flights.

Stair Carpet FAQs

Stair runner or full stair carpet, which is better?

It depends on the look and the staircase. A runner shows off a wood or stone staircase while softening the centre of each step, and uses less carpet. Full stair carpet covers the whole step for maximum comfort, warmth and quiet. We help you choose to suit your stairs and budget during a free site visit.

Is carpet on stairs slip rated?

No, and no carpet is. The R scale used to rate hard flooring has no carpet equivalent, so no supplier can give you a slip rating for stairs. What matters is the underlay grade, a low dense pile that holds its shape at the nosing, and a covering fixed tightly at every tread and nose. We fit to those three on straight, curved and spiral staircases.

What is the best carpet for stairs?

A low, dense pile or a loop pile such as Berber wears best on stair edges, where deep plush flattens quickly. For fibre, hard-wearing nylon suits busy stairs and wool offers natural luxury. Stairs are the highest-wear surface in a home, so durability matters more than anywhere else.

Do carpet tufts pull out on stair edges?

The step edge is where it happens if it happens, because every foot lands on the same narrow strip. A densely tufted low pile resists it, and a firm, professional fit at the nose matters as much as the carpet. On loop pile, a snagged loop should be cut level rather than pulled.

How much does stair carpet cost in Dubai?

Stairs are priced as the carpet (around AED 60 to 250/sqm, about AED 5.6 to 23.2/sqft) plus a fitting premium, since each step is fitted by hand. A typical straight staircase runs around AED 800 to 4,000 or more supplied and fitted, with premium full wool or cap-and-band staircases up to around 6,000, depending on steps, material and style. Request a free site visit.

Waterfall or cap-and-band fitting, what is the difference?

Waterfall runs the carpet straight over each step edge down to the next, a simpler, more economical finish. Cap-and-band wraps the carpet tightly around the contour of each step for a tailored, premium look, and covers the nosing edge, which on hard stairs is the part that takes almost every footfall. We fit both and advise which suits your staircase.

Can you carpet just the stairs and not the landing?

Yes. We can carpet the stairs only, the stairs and landing together, or run a matching runner through both for a continuous look. We measure and quote for whichever you prefer during the site visit.

Does stair carpet reduce noise?

Yes. Carpet and underlay absorb the sound of footsteps on the stairs, which is one of the noisiest spots in a home, especially in villas and duplexes. It makes the stairs quieter to use and cuts the noise carrying to rooms nearby.

Do you supply only, or also install?

Both, and stair fitting in particular is skilled work, since each step is shaped and fixed by hand. Our own team handles measurement, underlay and fitting, including curved and spiral stairs, so there is a single point of accountability. Free site visit comes as standard.
